A-10 A&C Thunderbolt II
A-10 A&C Thunderbolt II
The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II, known by aircrews as the “Warthog,” is the close air support aircraft of the United States Air Force. It succeeded the A-1 Skyraider in this role. Its namesake comes from the P-47 Thunderbolt.
The A-10 has a heavy titanium bathtub and redundant flight control systems that allow the aircraft to return despite heavy battle damage. In Operation Iraqi Freedom, manual reversion of control surfaces helped a pilot return to base. It has also undergone many upgrades since its inception. These include the Low Altitude Safety and Targeting Enhancement, the Night Vision Imaging System, A-10A+, the Precision Attack (A-10C), and multiple software upgrades.
The A-10A and A-10C will be in Gunship IV. The simulation will model redundancy of the flight control surfaces. While the gun is firing, A-10 pilots will feel the recoil of the venerable GAU-8 while stabilized by the PAC autopilot.
